When I first got the itch to start purging my house I went on IG and started following a few minimalism accounts, but within a few weeks, I’d unfollowed them all. It wasn’t because they didn’t have helpful tips, it was because their version of minimalism was very different than mine.
One account in particular was so minimal her home looked like a stark brown and tan AirBNB—almost no personal items, no pillows on the couch, almost no decor—honestly, it was depressing, so I thought, “well, maybe a minimalist life isn’t for me.” After all, I love decorating my house, entertaining, getting dressed—could I live a more minimalistic life without ditching all the things that I believe make my house a home?
Then I came across Shira Gill’s book, Minimalista, and my perspective totally shifted. It tossed my notions about boring minimalism to the side and made me realize that you can include the things you love—decor, items in your closet, pictures of your family and more and still be living with less.
I deemed this style “maximal minimalism”.
It’s warm and cozy without being cluttered and overwhelming. It’s bright and airy and also inviting. This type of minimalism to me is the best of both worlds. This type of minimalism is approachable and relatable and probably what many of us want anyway.
If you haven’t grabbed her book yet, it’s wonderful (and beautiful I might add!), or you can follow her for more tips here on Substack. My house still has a long way to go, but finding this middle-ground (kids make it so much harder!) has made the process of living with less a whole lot easier.
